The real question is how the round reaches the wedge
Orientation does not change wood species, knots or the machine's advertised force. It changes the loading problem. Horizontal mode asks the operator to get the round onto the beam. Vertical mode allows a heavy round to stay closer to ground level while the wedge/beam is repositioned around it.
That can be a major advantage for large rounds, but it does not automatically make vertical mode easier for a long session. Ground-level work can mean more bending, kneeling or repositioning. Ergonomics depend on round weight, operator workflow and what handling accessories are available.

When a log lift can beat vertical mode
A hydraulic log lift changes the problem again: instead of working at ground level, the machine raises the round to a horizontal working height.
