Vertical operation is best understood as a handling feature. It can reduce the need to lift large rounds onto a horizontal beam, but it does not increase splitting force and it is not automatically the most comfortable workflow for every user.
The current catalog contains 20 horizontal/vertical exact records. Vertical operation lets the operator work with a heavy round closer to ground level instead of lifting every piece onto a horizontal beam, which can matter more than a small tonnage difference.
A large round can be difficult to raise even when its wood is easy to split. Horizontal/vertical machines separate those two problems: the hydraulic system still provides the splitting force, while vertical orientation can reduce the need to lift the whole round to beam height.
Vertical mode is not automatically more comfortable. Ground-level work can involve bending, kneeling or controlling an irregular round close to the beam. The right ergonomic solution can therefore be vertical mode, a better work height, a log table/cradle, a hydraulic lift, or a combination depending on the exact workflow.

YARDMAX's current full-beam records are notable because the normalized data support optional log-table availability and, on YU3266/YU3666/YU4066, hydraulic-log-lift availability. That creates a different workflow from simply rolling a round into vertical mode. The machine can stay horizontal while handling accessories reduce lifting.
Do not assume one arrangement is universally easier. Vertical mode can minimize initial lifting; a lift/table system can reduce repeated bending and keep a production line at working height. Annual cord volume and how rounds arrive at the splitter should decide which problem matters more.
If rounds are consistently manageable, the operator prefers waist-height work and compact size matters more than handling very heavy pieces, a horizontal-only electric or compact gas machine can be the simpler choice. Use vertical capability as a handling requirement, not as a prestige feature.
