Log Splitter Tonnage Guide: What Size Do You Need?
Use tonnage as a force-class filter—not a promise that every log below a certain diameter will split. Wood difficulty, cycle time, annual workload, power source, orientation and lifting/handling needs can all change the better machine.
The short answer
Do not choose from diameter alone. Start with the hardest wood you regularly split, not the easiest round in the pile. Then balance force reserve against cycle time, weight, power source and ergonomics.

1. Wood difficulty comes before the tonnage label
Two rounds with the same diameter can split very differently. Straight-grain, seasoned wood can be far easier than a knotty crotch or twisted-grain round of the same size. Species matters, but species alone is still not enough: moisture, grain direction and defects can dominate an individual split.
That is why Log Splitter Match will not publish a fake rule such as “18-inch oak = 27 tons.” A better decision asks how often your pile contains the difficult pieces that make a lower-force machine stop, stall or require repeated repositioning.
2. Cycle time can change the whole workflow
If two machines both handle your typical wood, the faster full cycle can matter more than extra advertised force. But a cycle-time number is mechanical speed, not total job speed. Loading, positioning, multiple passes, clearing pieces and breaks still take time.

3. Annual workload changes what “enough” means
An occasional user may rationally choose a compact machine that stores easily even if a few difficult rounds need extra technique or are set aside. Someone processing several cords every year experiences every extra cycle, lift and reposition hundreds or thousands of times. At higher workloads, cycle time, work height, log support and vertical handling become much more important.
4. Horizontal vs vertical is an ergonomics decision
Vertical operation can let you roll very heavy rounds toward the footplate instead of lifting them onto the beam. But some operators prefer horizontal work at a more comfortable standing height, especially when a table, cradle or lift keeps pieces supported. Neither position is universally superior.
Notice how this intersects with tonnage: our current verified 20-ton records are horizontal-only, while current 22-, 25- and 27-ton records include horizontal/vertical machines. If vertical operation is a hard requirement, it can eliminate a whole class of otherwise suitable products before tonnage becomes the tie-breaker.
5. Power source can be a harder constraint than force
Electric splitters avoid gasoline storage and engine maintenance, but exact voltage/amperage and extension-cord requirements matter. Gas splitters work away from an outlet but add fuel, engine service and more machine weight. Three-point splitters depend on the tractor's actual hydraulic flow and pressure. Kinetic designs trade hydraulic behavior for very fast repeated action and a different set of operating characteristics.
6. Towing and portability need exact-model evidence
Do not assume wheels and a hitch mean public-road towing. Some compact machines are yard-tow only or not towable; some full-size manufacturers publish explicit 45 MPH limits. Frequently asked questions
How many tons should a log splitter have?
There is no universal tonnage that fits every buyer. Use advertised force as a class filter, then consider species, grain, moisture, maximum round size, annual workload, cycle time, orientation and the exact model documentation.
Can a small electric log splitter handle hardwood?
Some compact electric machines can split many hardwood rounds when the grain and size are favorable, but the result depends on the exact wood and machine. Do not convert a successful example into a universal hardwood guarantee.
Is a 27-ton log splitter better than a 20-ton splitter?
Not automatically. A 27-ton model may offer more advertised force, while a 20-ton model may be lighter or cycle faster. Compare the exact machines and your workload rather than choosing only by the larger number.
Does log diameter determine tonnage?
Diameter matters, but it is not enough by itself. Species, knots, crotches, grain direction, moisture and the shape of the round can materially change splitting difficulty.

Tonnage does not decide the machine type
After narrowing a force band, choose the platform that fits the job: electric for suitable-power/home use, gas for remote/full-size work, kinetic when very fast cycling is the priority, 3-point when tractor hydraulics are part of the system, or vertical-capable when heavy-round handling is the main constraint.
